Which Aspect Ratio Should You Use?
Picking the right ratio before you crop saves you from re-doing it later — most platforms expect a specific shape, and cropping to the wrong one usually means part of your image gets cut off or padded with empty space. Here's what each option in the dropdown above is actually for:
Free
No fixed shape — drag the crop box to any width and height. Best when you already know the exact pixel dimensions you need, or you're framing a shot by eye.
Square (1:1)
The standard for Instagram feed posts, profile pictures, and avatars on most platforms. Centers the subject evenly in both directions.
Widescreen (16:9)
Matches video and monitor proportions. Use it for YouTube thumbnails, presentation slides, and website banners or hero images.
Standard (4:3)
A slightly taller frame common in older displays, printed documents, and some e-commerce product photos where you want more vertical context.
Photo (3:2)
The native ratio of most DSLR and mirrorless camera sensors, and the standard size for 4×6 inch photo prints. Good default if the image came straight from a camera and you want to keep it print-ready.
Common Ways People Use This Tool
Profile & Avatar Photos
Crop to a tight square so your face or logo isn't cut off when the platform renders it in a circle.
Product Listing Photos
Trim distracting background out of a product shot and standardize every listing image to the same ratio.
Blog & Article Headers
Cut a wide 16:9 banner out of a larger photo so it slots cleanly into a CMS template.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this crop tool really free to use?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and no limit on how many images you can crop.
Do my images get uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping happens entirely in your browser using the canvas API. Your image is never sent anywhere.
Will cropping reduce the image quality?
Cropping only removes pixels outside the selected area — it does not recompress or resample the remaining pixels, so quality is preserved.
Can I crop a PNG with transparency?
Yes. Transparent areas in PNG files are preserved after cropping and in the downloaded file.
What file formats are supported?
You can upload JPG, PNG, or WebP images, and the cropped result downloads in the same format as the original.
